In a surprise move, the woman who has been the voice of the Virgin Islands Telephone Corp. for more than 11 years resigned Monday. Katrina White Comissiong confirmed Tuesday night that she is leaving the company and said she also will leave the island to return to her native Richmond, Va. Her last day on the job and on St. Thomas will be Feb. 28.
"It is kind of sudden, but it's for the best," Comissiong said.
"It's about my kids," she said. "I think my children will have a better opportunity in the States." Her daughter Katrina, 15, and son Anane, 13, will attend public schools in Richmond.
"Vitelco was not just a job for me," she said. "It was my life. We've done a lot of great things together. I feel very, very sad because that's my family."
Along with its sister companies owned by Jeffrey Prosser and Innovative Communication Corp., Vitelco is restructuring and changing its name to Innovative. Comissiong said she is sorry she won't be part of upcoming developments.
Comissiong has lived in the Virgin Islands for 20 years. She worked first on St. Croix as a reporter for the Avis newspaper, then as the spokesperson for the Water and Power Authority. She also worked at television station Channel 10, radio station WSTA and for two years taught speech, mass communications and public relations at the University of the Virgin Islands.
She has been active in Rotary and various other community groups.
Her own career plans are uncertain, she said, but "it's about my kids right now."
