CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST 2 IN CARNIVAL MURDER

Charges of first-degree murder against two of three suspects accused in connection with the 1999 Carnival Village killing of Ferlin Harris were dropped Thursday when prosecutors decided they did not have enough evidence against the two to go to trial.
According to a report in the V.I. Daily News, Assistant Attorney General Lofton Holder asked that the charges against Alvin Charles and Kahli Ubiles be dismissed with the option of later refiling. Charles and Ubiles had been accused of aiding and abetting the suspected triggerman, Abijah Brown.
Harris was killed by a gunshot to the head at the Carnival Village just after it opened in 1999.
Brown, 18, is jailed in Orange County, Fla., where he has been accused of attempting to murder a police officer. Prosecutors will seek to extradite him to St. Thomas where he faces charges of first-degree murder, reckless endangerment, a weapons charge and two counts of first-degree assault.
Territorial Court Judge Rhys Hodge granted the motion after prosecutors failed to respond to defense motions concerning Charles and Ubiles.
