CYCLING FEDERATION SETS RIDES AND RACES FOR 2001

Time to dust off the bike and shake out the legs, the V.I. Cycling Federation has announced its tentative schedule for the 2001 season.
Some of the routes and some of the dates might change, said VICF President Michael McQueston, "but it is a start."
VICF group road rides will be Wednesdays at 6:30 a.m. and start at St. Croix Bike and Tours, Frederiksted. The rides will vary, but count on an approximately one-hour ride on the West is Best course or a highway pace line.
Saturday mornings are longer rides. Meet at 6:45 a.m. at St. Croix Bike and Tours in Frederiksted.
"We will be adding more rides later in the season," McQueston said.
A series of races will also be held, starting on Jan. 14 with the Anything Goes Race. The race starts at Gentle Winds on the north shore and ends at Hamm's Bay. Riders can use any bike and any route. The race will start at 7 a.m. at Gentle Winds.
The next event is set for Jan. 27. It will be the 54-plus miles from Frederiksted to Pt. Udall and then back to Frederiksted.
The Airport Loop Race is Feb. 4. This race is three laps on the 6.1 mile course. Meet at the entrance to the Randall "Doc" James Race Track at 7a.m.
Feb. 24, will be the North Shore Road Race from Gentle Winds to Carambola and back. This is a two-lap challenge of 12 miles a lap on the beautiful north shore. Meet at Gentle Winds at 7 a.m. March 4 will feature the first-ever East End Triathlon. Then on March 24 it is the South Shore Road Race. The race starts at Junie's Bar and heads east to Pt. Udall and then back to Cane Garden.
On April 8, it is the classic West is Best Triathlon. April 22, will be the annual East End Loop Time Trial featuring one, two or three laps. It’s the rider’s choice.
And on May 6, the granddaddy of St. Croix events, the St. Croix International Triathlon. This year it is going to be a half Iron Man.
