NATIONAL SHELTER WEEK CELEBRATED LOCALLY

Gathering all pets. The Humane Society of St. Thomas is celebrating National Shelter Appreciation Week with a Grand Finale Fun Day Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. at the shelter in Nadir.
Shelter receptionist Delsa Thomas has been calling owners of pets adopted from the shelter all week with a special invitation to attend. All pet adoptees are invited, along with friends, owners and any pet that's handy, adoptee or not. This is an equal opportunity reunion.
A cake walk and sack races are featured, however not for the canine or feline entrants. Debbie Dunham of Debbie's Dedicated Dogs will have a dog training demonstration in the afternoon, and baths and clips will be available all day. It's $20 for small dogs and $25 for the larger ones. However, Thomas cautioned it might be more if your dog really needs a "Big Time" bath.
Thomas said the baths are always available at the shelter, preferably by appointment. And this is a good time to pick up your dog license at $5, and, it is the law. Cats may be adopted at $40, and dogs at $45, which also is the everyday rate. This includes spaying or neutering and necessary shots.
Winners of the Humane Society poster contest will be announced, and a grand prize winner will receive a $100 savings bond. Poster contest entrants include Montessori and Antilles Schools.
The event, which will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., will be covered live by Radio One WVWI, KISS, JAMZ, WWKS and WVJS from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Food, hot dogs of course, and drinks will be on sale.
