MAN DIES AFTER ALLEGED BEATING WITH BAT

A St. Croix man is dead after reportedly being beaten with a blunt object following a fight at an Estate Profit Bar Sunday night. Police Commissioner Franz Christian said Monday morning two persons were taken into custody within an hour of the fatal attack and one has been formally charged in the man's death.
Christian said investigators believe the fight was the result of an earlier automobile accident where "the victim followed two men into the Estate Profit area to confront them about hitting his truck." He said the victim followed the two men into the bar with the blunt object in hand and a fight ensued.
"Police investigators believe that during the struggle the blunt object, a baseball bat, was wrestled away from the man by the two suspects he confronted," Christian said.
The two suspects attacked the man with the bat causing fatal injuries, police said. Christian said the victim, who remained unidentified until notification of next of kin, died at the Juan F. Luis Hospital. He did not name the suspects taken into custody and citing the ongoing investigation, he did not comment on reports that the suspects also attacked the man with a machete.
Christian urged anyone with information on the auto accident or subsequent fight and assault at the Estate Profit Bar to call police at 778-2211.
