LABOR WINS ONE, LOSES ONE ON ST. JOHN

Organized labor won one and lost one on St. John recently.
Unionized hotel workers at Caneel Bay Resort ratified a new three-year contract during a Wednesday meeting in Cruz Bay. About 100 members of the Caneel Bay bargaining unit voted unanimously, said Steelworkers President Luis "Tito" Morales.
The union president did not disclose the terms of the contract during a Thursday telephone interview but he said the new contract includes wage increases.
Meanwhile, Morales said he was surprised that two of the votes challenged in a recent election at St. John's other major hotel were cast in favor of unionization.
"Those were the ones we challenged because they were supervisors," he said.
The final result of the balloting was revealed by officials at the National Labor Relations Board's San Juan office late last week. When 11 challenged ballots were opened and counted the vote for ratifying a new bargaining unit at Westin was rejected by 103 to 83. The original count was 91 against, 81 in favor of unionization.
