UVI PROFESSOR HONORED AT CARIFESTA CLOSING

An economics professor on the St. Croix campus of the University of the Virgin Islands was honored Saturday for "outstanding contribution to Caribbean arts and culture" at the closing ceremonies of the seventh Carifesta on St. Kitts and Nevis.
S.B. Jones-Hendrickson was among eight individuals recognized for their contributions in the arts.
He was honored for his quasi-autobiographical novel, "Sonny Jim of Sandy Point," which captures life in the Caribbean in the 1950s. He also was cited for his academic work and for contributions to regional organizations such as the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, the Caribbean Examinations Council and the Regional Program of Monetary Studies.
The others honored were Boogsie Sharpe of Trinidad and Tobago, steelpan; Erwin Devries of Suriname, artist; Karl Broodhagen of Barbados, sculptor; Louise Bennet of Jamaica, poet and actress; Olive Lewin of Jamaica, music; Peter Minshall of Trinidad and Tobago, costume design; and Sesene of St. Lucia, folksinger.
