FORMER LABOR COMMISSIONER SAYS NO TO SENATE

Dear Source:
After much reflection and soul-searching, I have decided not to run at this time for a seat in the Senate of the Virgin Islands.
It has been a difficult decision. I am very thankful however to the many people — relatives, friends, acquaintances and strangers — who have encouraged me to run. I am flattered that they have seen hope and a viable leadership alternative in me. The support has been awesome and encouraging.
But, while I find the challenge most attractive, in my heart, this is not my time to run for the Senate. So, I have chosen to seek other arenas and other ways to make a difference in our community.
There was much to learn during this brief exploration. I heard the most cynical and bitter expressions of contempt for political leaders, the Senate and other governmental institutions. I also heard sobering insights about our political system as well as the profound disappointment of those who have lost faith in the elective process and the superficial method of choosing our leaders.
The unfortunate depictions of our political leaders and institutions did not surprise me nor discourage me. My strong faith and respect for our democratic institutions remains completely intact. I believe that public service is a most honorable, though thankless profession. I have great admiration for the ethical and well-intentioned leaders who strive each day to do their best, despite the constant humiliation and personal attacks.
Finally about our current condition — let me state that although there will be more economic pain ahead, I firmly believe that we will rise victoriously from this depressing condition. We will overcome this crisis. I believe that our people have the capacity and intelligence to put aside petty and parochial differences, select better leaders and work together to overcome the common enemies—ignorance, apathy and fear of success.
I believe that our schools can be vastly improved, and that we can end our misguided labor quarrels and develop a world-class workforce. I believe that our entire government can be reformed, streamlined and modernized to better serve our people. I believe that we can stimulate and diversify our economy and create better paying jobs for our workers. I believe that we will resolve our economic and fiscal crisis, and begin to enjoy an unprecedented quality of life.
I KNOW there is a brighter day on the horizon for the people of the Virgin Islands.
