NO DRIVERS' LICENSES BEING ISSUED

No drivers' licenses are currently being issued in the territory, according to Lawrence Olive, director of the department of Motor Vehicles. Owing to a federal mandate just issued, social security numbers must not be listed on licenses, Olive claimed.
Current licenses use SS numbers as the license number.
An on-line search for the federal mandate did not reveal any such mandate and a call to Delegate Donna Christian-Christensen's office didn't turn up the mandate either.
A spokesperson for Christiansen said they would look into the matter Wednesday.
Meantime, Olive said the department is going back to the "old system,"of laminated cards with
pictures attached. The department has not yet received suppplies from the vendor to issue the old cards, but they are expected "any day,"according to Olive.
The new cards, without the social security slot, will include a box to fill in for organ donors, Olive said.
