Dr. David Markovitz from the University of Michigan Medical School will be visiting UVI under funding by the NIH MARC grant (Minority Access to Research Careers). Markovitz will be presenting a special senior science seminar on Tuesday, February 1, in Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus, from 12:00-1:00 on the "Regulation of HIV replication by intriguing cellular factors." Health care and science professionals interested in HIV research are invited to attend.
Markovitz is an Associate Professor in the Infectious Diseases Division, Internal Medicine Department at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
He currently has five funded grants from various NIH institutes and the American Cancer Society. His research has included work on HIV-1 and HIV-2, arthritis, leukemia, herpes virus, influenza and other infectious diseases.
Gwen-Marie Moolenaar, UVI Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Community Development stated that "Our Marc program invites two outstanding scientists to visit the university each year. We are absolutely thrilled that Dr. Markovitz, who is a world renowned scientist, could arrange his schedule to be here with us."
Markovitz is currently the major professor of a UVI alumnus Neil Faulkner, who works with him. Faulkner is in the MD/PhD program at the University of Michigan. "We were delighted that Dr. Markovitz has expressed his pleasure with Neil’s preparation for graduate work," said Moolenaar.
UVI has participated in the MARC program since 1993 and has placed many students at outstanding graduate programs. The next visitor under the MARC program is Dr. Carlos Gutierrez from California State University.
