GERS to Complete St. Croix Headquarters Building in Less Than a Year

Nov. 10, 2008 — The new headquarters on St. Croix for the Government Employees' Retirement System should be completed within nine to 10 months, the GERS board announced Monday.
At their Nov. 24 meeting, the trustees will meet with a potential contractor for the project, which board chairman Vincent Liger estimated at a value of $6 to $7 million. The board discussed the project and potential contractors Monday during an executive session. Afterwards the trustees announced the upcoming meeting with the contractor, but did not discuss details.
The project was begun about two years ago, Liger said, and is half completed. The construction is just behind the system's St. Croix office at 3005 Orange Grove.
Also during the meeting, the trustees approved a revision of policies on travel, credit-card use and per diem expenses for GERS employees. The revisions were part of an ongoing overhaul of the systems policy manual.
The trustees approved a $75 per diem for employees when traveling on business within the Virgin Islands and $150 elsewhere in the world. The per diem covers food, ground transportation and other incidental expenses of travel. The board voted to rescind an allowance for personal phone calls by employees traveling on system business. The old policy allowed two personal calls of five minutes each to be charged to the employee's hotel room. Recognizing that now almost everyone travels with a cell phone, which would be cheaper than calling from the hotel, the trustees revoked the policy.
