March 16, 2007 – Ten elementary and middle/junior high school students have qualified for participation in the 2007 Territorial Geography Bee examination, which will be administered at 9 a.m., Friday, March 30, at the Education Department's Curriculum Center in Estate Tutu.
The students received accolades for their knowledge of world geography from their various schools during oral competitions and were administered the pretest for admission to the territorial competition, according to Annie Smith, district social studies coordinator.
The students are Ingrid Berry, Joseph A. Gomez Elementary; Liam Marin, St. Croix Country Day School; Coral Breuning, Gift Hill School – St. John; Ameen A. Rachid, Leonard Dober Elementary; Olani P. Beltou, Calvary Christian Academy; Danielle D. Aguilar, Antilles School; Edward B. Smith, Yvonne E. Milliner-Bowsky Elementary; Jarvon J. Stout, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School; Muta M. Abiff, Addelita Cancryn Junior High; and Jamal T. Masras, Ulla F. Muller Elementary.
According to a press release from Acting Superintendent of the St. Thomas-St. John School District Lisa Hassel-Forde, they will take the National Test and the completed answer sheets will be faxed to the National Geographic Bee office in Washington, D.C. The student who obtains the highest score will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands in Washington, D.C. at the national competition in May.
