Emancipation Play Considers a Different Version of Quest for Freedom

While the federal Juneteenth holiday marked its fourth observance as a U.S. federal holiday, people in the Virgin Islands commemorated 177 years since the emancipation of enslaved people. But this year on St. John, performers of the annual play pointed out a similarity between the two holidays: just declaring freedom, they said, does not make a people free.

The seats were filled at Slim Manโ€™s Parking Lot when the St. John Drama Club performed a revised version of “Set the Record Straight.” For the past several years, the drama club has presented original plays examining various aspects of events leading up to the Emancipation Declaration by then-Danish Gov. Peter von Scholten on July 3, 1848. This year, they examined the 30 years following the declaration and found that little had changed for the formerly enslaved Africans.

โ€œWe need to educate ourselves about our history and how we got to where we are today. We will find our ancestors were forced back on the same plantations as contract workers in what would be considered forced labor,โ€ said actress Myrna George.

It wasnโ€™t until the Fireburn of 1878 that the contract labor system was dismantled and slavery under a different name ended, she said. And it was there that the similarities with Juneteenth appeared, also circumstances differed; enslaved people in the state of Texas did not hear about their change in status until two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the U.S. Emancipation Proclamation.

Author and historian Nadine Marchena Kean served as mistress of ceremonies for Thursdayโ€™s event in Cruz Bay. The play was one of several performances meant to evoke thoughts of freedom. There was interpretive dance by students from the St. John School of the Arts, Bamboula-inspired dance by the Caribbean Ritual Dancers, drumming by the Echo People and quadrille by VI for Life.

At the end of the program, Marchena mentioned why some scholars would agree that July 3, July 4 and even July 5 should be considered as part of the V.I. Emancipation story. It took two days for the enslaved people of St. John to receive word that they were then considered free.

โ€œThis is a celebration that is critically important to the people, the culture and the heritage of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands- the then-Danish West Indies. St. John is particularly special to me because we talk about those who advocate and we honor those on St. Croix who advocated for all of us. The St. Johnians started it in 1733, but they were the last to know about their freedom,โ€ she said.

Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach, St. John Administrator Shikima Jones-Sprauve, and Sen. Franklin Johnson joined those in attendance.

Daniele Ducrot, Restaurant Owner, Dies

0

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Daniele Navarro Ducrot on January 7th, 2025, at the age of 83, due to complications after a fall. She was born in Toulon, France.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andre, in 2008. She is survived by her son, Olivier, a sister, Martine Tobschall, and a brother, Patrick Navarro. Survivors also include nephew Erick and niece Natalie Tobschall.

Daniele and Andre met and fell in love as teenagers, married, and in 1966, Olivier was born.

That same year, they relocated from the south of France to Canada. Shortly after, they moved to Vermont, where they operated the successful restaurant Cafe Shelburne for two decades.

In 1988, the trio moved to St Croix. Neither fire nor hurricane defeated them and their third attempt resulted in the critically acclaimed Le St. Tropez. For two decades, their French Mediterranean restaurant in Frederiksted was sought out by locals and visitors alike. The courtyard on King Street attracted people looking for delicious food and a welcoming atmosphere.

Daniele was a natural in the front of the house and she hosted with style. She was energetic, gracious, tough and tenacious. She wore many hats, and to describe her as memorable would be inadequate. She has been and will be missed.

Danieleโ€™s ashes will be laid to rest in the same area of the Caribbean Sea where Andre was buried.

Leonite Fund I Acquires Seaborne Airlines for $1.425M at Bankruptcy Auction

Leonite Fund I LP of Delaware has purchased Seaborne Airlines for $1.425 million following a bankruptcy auction held Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, according to an asset purchase agreement filed Thursday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida.

The total amount includes a cash purchase price of $700,000, estimated liabilities of $675,000, plus Seaborneโ€™s transition services fee, according to the agreement.

Corporate Flight Management of Smyrna, Tennessee, doing business as Contour Aviation, has been designated the backup bidder, with an offer of $1.375 million, according to the court filings.

The sale ends months of uncertainty over whether Seaborne, which is based in Puerto Rico and serves St. Thomas and St. Croix, would survive the bankruptcy of its sister company, Silver Airways. Both filed for Chapter 11 protections in December, with Silver abruptly ceasing operationsย June 11 after its sale to Wexford Capital, announcing in a statement that the buyer โ€œdetermined to not continue Silverโ€™s flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.โ€

According to the sale agreement, both partiesย โ€œintend that this transaction will preserve the operational continuity of the Business, maintain all existing Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Transportation certificates and authorizations without interruption, and ensure continued service to the communities served by Seller.โ€

As of Friday morning, Seaborne was advertising one-way summer fare sales as low as $79 through Labor Day on its website.

Silver, which operated intra-island flights in the USVI via Seaborne,ย ย filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late Decemberย in Floridaโ€™s Southern District following a series of financial challenges, including nearly $1 million in unpaid fees to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Seaborne filed its own petition at the same time.

The move came six years after Seaborneย voluntarily reorganizedย in 2018 and announced it had secured a new $4.2 million credit facility and entered into a purchase agreement with Silver, which was headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

USVI Soccer Federation Activates Menโ€™s National Team for Historic Outrigger Cup in Arkansas

The US Virgin Islands Soccer Federation is pleased to announce the activation of its Menโ€™s National Team, the Dashing Eagles, for participation in the inaugural Outrigger Cup, to be hosted in Springdale, Arkansas, from August 10โ€“17.

This landmark tournament, organized by the Marshall Islands Football Association, marks the first time the Marshall Islands have hosted an international competition of this nature. It will feature three national teams: the Marshall Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the US Virgin Islands.

The tournament will see the Dashing Eagles face the Marshall Islands team for the very first timeโ€”a significant milestone in fostering new sporting relationships. They will also renew their competitive rivalry with the Turks and Caicos Islands National Team, with whom they hold a balanced head-to-head record of 1 win, 1 draw, and 1 loss.

To guide the team through this competition cycle, the USVISF is proud to welcome Head Coach Terrance โ€œTerryโ€ Jones Sr. Preparation for the Outrigger Cup will include a dedicated training camp at the USVISF Technical Center in St. Croix from July 16โ€“21, 2025. This will be followed by a final pre-tournament camp in Miami from August 5โ€“9, after which the team will travel directly to Arkansas for the competition.

The USVI Soccer Federation thanks its stakeholders, partners, and the entire Virgin Islands community for their continued support of our national teams as we work to develop football across the territory.

USVI Soccer Federation Hosts Successful U14 Girls National Team Preparation Camp at Bethlehem Soccer Complex

The US Virgin Islands Soccer Federation (USVISF) is pleased to share that our U14 Girls National Team held a successful preparation camp this past weekend at the USVISF Headquarters, the Bethlehem Soccer Complex on St. Croix.

The camp marked an important milestone in the teamโ€™s journey toward the upcoming CFU U14 Challenge Series, scheduled for August 15โ€“24, 2025 in Trinidad and Tobago. Over the weekend, the players and coaching staff focused on honing technical skills, building team cohesion, and deepening tactical understanding.

As part of their preparation, the team played two friendly matches against local opposition. These games provided valuable match experience and allowed coaches to assess progress in a competitive environment.

The USVI has been drawn into Tier 2, Group A for the CFU U14 Challenge Series, where they will face:

Saint Lucia

Bonaire

St. Kitts & Nevis

Dominica

With this past weekendโ€™s camp complete, the team now looks ahead to their next preparation event: a training tour in the Bahamas from July 24โ€“27, 2025. This trip will serve as the final tune-up before the squad heads to Trinidad and Tobago for the tournament.

USVISF remains committed to supporting our young athletes and providing meaningful development opportunities on and off the field. We thank our players, coaches, parents, and local partners for making this weekendโ€™s camp a success, and we look forward to cheering on our U14 Girls National Team this summer.

VIWMA Closes Road Near Old Cancryn School

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority would like to inform the community about a temporary road closure set for Thursday, July 3, 2025, starting at 7:30 p.m. and lasting until further notice.

Bypass Installlation Road (Submitted photo)

This closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of a bypass near the Veterans Drive Highway at the intersection of the former Addelita Cancryn Junior High School.

During this time, the eastbound lane will be narrowed to a single lane of traffic. Additionally, traffic flow between Judy Gomez Highway (Harwood Highway) and Veterans Drive will be restricted, allowing crews to safely work in the intersection.

The installation of this bypass is essential for rerouting influent water around the collapsed section of a 42-inch main sewer line that carries wastewater to the Cancryn Pump Station. This effort will help reduce wastewater levels within the collection system and mitigate overflows caused by the sewer line failure.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution in the area, as exposure to wastewater runoff can pose serious health risks due to the presence of harmful contaminants. Residents are advised to avoid areas showing signs of possible sewage discharge, including discolored water, strong odors, and any runoff near manholes, gutters, or drainage paths.

VIWMA crews will be actively working to restore operations as quickly and safely as possible. The Authority is asking both pedestrians and motorists to adhere to all traffic and safety controls in place.

We appreciate the communityโ€™s patience and understanding during this necessary repair effort.

For updates or further assistance, please contact the Division of Wastewater at (340) 715-9151 or Communications Management at communications@viwma.org. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
