"Today, we gather to honor and celebrate Virgin Islands Flag Day, a day of profound significance for our community. On this day, we commemorate the complex history, cultural heritage, and the enduring spirit of the Virgin Islands, symbolized thru our flag. In 1917, the Danish West Indies were transferred from the Danish Empire to the United States, marking these islands offically, the Virgin islands of the Unted States. During the early years of American rule, our ancestors faced numerous challenges, including the complex process of obtaining American citizenship. Yet, through perseverance and the unwavering efforts of visionaries like Rothschild Francis and David Hamilton Jackson, we progressed toward greater rights and self-determination." - Stephanie Chalana Brown (Director of Division of Virgin Islands Cultural Education-
