My grandmother Catherine Smalls was born on the island of St. John on April 9, 1888. She was an infant when her mother died. She was brought to St. Thomas at age 3 by her cousin Catherine Roberts and was raised in the Roberts household. She witnessed the transfer of the islands to American rules.
