VITFF to Hold Tabarie Henry V.I. National Track and Field Championships on June 22

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation will host the Tabarie Henry Virgin Islands National Track and Field Championships at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 22, at the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School track on St. Thomas.

To participate in the VI National Championship, a runner must be registered with the VI Track and Field Federation.

This year’s race is named after Tabarie Henry, an accomplished Virgin Islands athlete in the mid-2000s and 2010s.

Tabarie Henry, born on Dec. 1, 1987, on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, specialized in the 400m while competing for the USVI. Henry’s personal best in the 400m is 44.77 and for the 400m short track (indoors) 45.81. In the 200m, his PR is 20.71 short track 200m, Henry still holds the Virgin Islands national records for the 400m outdoor and the 200m, 400m, 500m, 600m short track (indoors) and as a member in the 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m relays.

In 2008, Henry won a silver medal in the (NACAC U23), North American Central American and Caribbean Championships Under 23, in the 400m. In the 2009 World Championships and 2011 World Indoor Championships, Henry finished fourth in the world in the 400m. Henry has represented the Virgin Islands in two Olympic Games, 2008 in Beijing, China and 2012 in London, United Kingdom.

While attending Texas A&M, he helped his team win four NCAA Championships in the 4x400m relay, two outdoors and two indoors. Henry is also a seven-time All-American

Henry transitioned to a career in coaching track and field and contributed to the success of track and field programs at New Mexico Junior College and UNLV, while receiving accolades such as 2022 Women’s Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year and 2024 Men’s Track and Field Assistant Coach of the year.

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation will also host the Olympic Day run on St. Thomas at the Eudora Kean High School track at 11 a.m., June 22, and at 9 a.m., on June 29, on St. Croix at Frederiksted Beach.
