The United States Virgin Islands Senior Men’s Basketball Team got off to a shaky start in the first of their two-games series against the Wagner College Seahawks on Wednesday evening at the University of the Virgin Islands Elridge Blake Sports and Fitness Center.
The Division I school fell into a hole early as the home team raced out to a 7-0 lead. ISV, the Olympic code used to identify the United States Virgin Islands in international competition, struggled to fully control this high-spirited team from Staten Island, New York. Every time ISV built a lead in the first half, the Seahawks erased the deficits and took a three-point lead into intermission.
The second half was very competitive until Wagner’s Melvin Council Jr. hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped the Seahawks fly away with the 78-68 victory. Council led Wagner College with 15 points. Javier Ezquerra and Zaire Williams added 14 and 13, respectively, for the winning team. Shaquan Jules and Jahsean Corbett were the top scorers for ISV, as they both dropped 16 points each.
The second and final game of this series will be played on Thursday beginning at 6.30 p.m. at the Elridge Blake Sports and Fitness Center on the campus of UVI, St. Thomas.
