VITFF Bulletin: Michelle Smith Sets New V.I. National Junior Record

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Michelle Smith, a high school Junior at Montverde Academy, competed in the New Balance Indoor National Championship in Boston, Mass., from March 9 – 12.

She won her heat of the 400m in the preliminary rounds with a new Virgin Islands National Junior Indoor Record of 54.37. In the final of the 400m, Smith ran her second fastest time in her career and placed 4th with a time of 54.81. Her performance in the 400m ranks her 5th in the world for U18 athletes. She is still ranked No.1 in the world in the 600m with her Millrose Games performance.

On March 12, she ran a 53.88 split in the 4x400m relay and helped her Monteverde team win the National Indoor Championship with a new Florida State record of 3:45.69.

The New Balance Indoor National Championship concluded Smith’s 2023 Indoor season.

She will be competing next in the Bob Hayes Relays in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 17.

Omari Bennett

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Omari Bennett, a student at Hammond High School in Columbia, S.C., competed in the Redhawk Invitational in Blythewood, S.C., on March 11. Bennett finished first in the prelim of the 110m hurdles in 15.25 and continued on to place 1st in the final with a time of 14.69.

Bennett will compete next in his home meet, the Hammond Meet, on March 15.

Sofia Swindell

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Sofia Swindell, a sophomore at Lawrenceville High School, competed in the New Balance Indoor National Championship in Boston, Mass., from March 9 – 12.

Swindell finished 3rd in the preliminary rounds of the 60m Hurdles with a time of 9.09, which qualified her for the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, She ran a personal record of 9.05, finishing 3rd in her race and 9th overall, and just missing advancing to the final.

The New Balance Indoor National Championship concluded Swindell’s 2023 Indoor season.

Nicola Peters

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Nicola Peters, a junior at Sparkman High School, competed in the New Balance Indoor National Championship in Boston, Mass., from March 9 – 12.

Peters finished 4th in the preliminary rounds of the 60m dash in a time of 8.00 seconds.

She will compete next in the Homewood Invitational Outdoor meet in Homewood, Ala., on March 18.
