Man Visiting St. Thomas Drowns at Frenchman’s Cove Beach

A man visiting St. Thomas drowned at the beach Thursday, the V.I. Police Department reported.

The 911 Call Center dispatched officers to Frenchman’s Cove beach to a possible drowning, according to the police report.

When officers arrived at the scene, Emergency Medical Technicians were in the process of transporting a man to the Schneider Regional Medical Center who had been pulled from the water by his wife. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the man was pronounced dead, according to the police report.

The deceased, who has been identified by next of kin as 81-year-old Courtney Nelthropp, was swimming with his wife at Frenchman Cove’s beach when he yelled for help. His wife was able to pull him ashore and perform CPR until the EMTs arrived, the report stated.

An autopsy will be performed, police said.
