St. Thomas Shooting Victim, 17, Dies of Injuries

A teenager shot Thursday night in Sugar Estate on St. Thomas has died of his injuries, turning the case into a homicide investigation, the V.I. Police Department reported Monday night.

Janyi Barry, 17, died Sunday at Schneider Regional Medical Center, where he was being treated for multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

A second victim suffered a leg wound and remains in stable condition, the report stated.

The shooting occurred around 9:37 p.m. Thursday, when a caller reported to 911 that several shots were fired on 7th Street in Sugar Estate, Charlotte Amalie. Officers were dispatched to the scene where they discovered two people with gunshot wounds, police said.

Both were transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Barry’s death is the 16th homicide in the territory this year, and the sixth on St. Thomas, according to the Source Homicide List.* There have been 10 on St. Croix.

Police ask that anyone with any information about this crime contact 911, 340-774-2211, Crime Stoppers V.I. at 1-800-222-8477, or the Major Crime Division at 340-642-8449.

*The Source Homicide List is a chronological log of the homicides recorded in 2022 in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as reported by the VIPD. Cases are broken down by island. While this listing is based on VIPD reports, the Source does not include suicides or vehicular homicides in its listing that the police and some other media do. This can lead to a discrepancy in the number of incidents reported.
