Coming Through Covid-19 Art Contest Winners Announced

Virgin Islands public and private high school students were invited to participate in the Coming Through Covid-19 Art Contest earlier this year and were asked to create artwork indicating their personal reflections of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The student work reflected their thoughts and feelings on isolation or quarantine, the sickness or loss of a friend or family member, and how they coped with the pandemic’s life changes.

Winners of the Coming Through Covid-19 Art Contest have been determined and are as follows:

• St. John – First Place Waldin Gil Perez, age 17.

• St. Thomas – First Place – Jamyka Smith, age 17, Second Place – Shaynee Cherival, age 15, Third Place – ZNaysa Anthony, age 16, and Fourth Place – Arissa Breedy, age 15.

• St. Croix – First Place (tied) Izabelle Rodriguez, age 15 and Hope Samuel, age 15, Second Place – Miajah Benton, age 17, Third Place – Tsehai Alfred, age 16 and Fourth Place – Priya Mittal, age 15.

First-place winners will receive $500 gift cards. Second place winners will receive $300 gift cards, third place winners will get $150 gift cards, and fourth place winners will receive $75.00 gift cards.

The public is invited to attend an Open House on St. Croix on Saturday, March 12 at the Dorsch Center and on St. Thomas at the VICA Gallery on Saturday, March 26th.

The contest organizers included the USVI Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Chickasaw Nation Industries, a CDC contractor, and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) Virgin Islands Council on the Arts (VICA).
