81C will launch “WONDER” an exhibition of fine art by Jasmine Lindquist.
An opening reception will take place at 81C Kronprindsens Gade from 5 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Feb. 26, at 81C’s downtown location on Strand Gade in historic Charlotte Amalie.

Lindquist’s latest series of acrylic paintings, “WONDER,” portrays human adventure and evolutions amongst fantastical landscapes, vibrant colors and curious symbols. This exhibition asks viewers to explore their own intimate reflections as they relate to uncommon and beautiful events and the stories therein. Reminiscent of “Through the Looking Glass,” the show delivers moments of surprising contact, chance encounters and enduring strength along the journey. — The curators of 81C (February 2022)

Artist statement:

“The purpose of my art is to encourage imagination and create a space for thought and storytelling. I’ve been haunted yet inspired by the otherworldliness of the VI environment since the 2017 hurricanes. I wanted to create a body of work that portrays themes of transition, change, growth, life, death and the resilience of nature. “WONDER” is a surreal exploration of our own Caribbean wonderland through a whimsical yet distorted lens. Using acrylic paint on canvas, I seek to create illustrations that instill a sense of familiarity and intrigue.”

Jasmine Lindquist is a 27-year-old U.S. Virgin Islands-based painter and muralist. She was born and raised on St. Thomas and is an alumna of the School of Visual Arts and Careers (SVAC) program. After graduating high school and SVAC, she moved on to attend Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, after receiving a full tuition scholarship. Antioch College is a liberal arts institution where she continued her art classes while she studied and received her Bachelor’s in Psychology.

In 2017, Lindquist returned to St. Thomas for what was meant to be a visit but was caught up in hurricanes Irma and Maria. Two years after weathering the storms, she had started her journey to reconnecting with the art community in the USVI with her first solo art show, “Reintroduction.”

Since then, Lindquist has not only participated in many other art shows and group exhibitions, but she had also painted several murals both public and private all over the island of St. Thomas. Her most prominent murals include “Greetings from St. Thomas” at Yacht Haven Grande, “Butterflies on Yellow Cedar” at the Charlotte Amalie Overlook and the Mango Market Exhibit at the VI Children’s Museum.

Working primarily with acrylic paint and canvas, she is inspired most by nature, fiction and psychology. An illustrator at heart, she creates art with the intention of sparking the viewers’ imaginations and encouraging them to create their own stories and interpretations of her work.
