Community members from Frederiksted to Christiansted joined the Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation for the Midre A. Cummings Playground and Park ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday on St. Croix.
The park’s namesake also was on hand, saying, “I challenge young people today to take my name down.” Throughout the ceremony, Gov. Albert Bryan Jr., Commissioner Calvert White, and Senate Vice President Novelle Francis, representing Senate President Donna Frett-Gregory, showed honor to Cumming’s mother, Carmen Bastian.
The ceremony was nothing short of cultural, with mocko jumbies and dancers dressed in brightly-colored carnival attire.
Upon the cutting of the ribbon, Bryan and White joined Cummings and other dignitaries and community members from Children First and Our Town Frederiksted to unveil the sign as children explored the redesigned playground in Frederiksted.
