After a great experience representing the Virgin Islands at the Olympics and having been ranked number six in the World for 2021, Nicholas D’Amour turned his attention to the indoor season.  In his first tournament of 2022 Nicholas reached the podium.  He finished third in the 2022 Lancaster Classic.

The Lancaster Classic is the largest indoor archery tournament on the East Coast of the United States. Nearly 2,000 archers from all over the world competed at this year’s Classic, held at the massive Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Penn.

The Classic is known as a tournament where the improbable is always possible due to its unique format. Every archer shoots a qualifying 60-arrow round, where a perfect score is 660, since the X-ring counts as 11 points at the Classic. Following qualifications, archers are ranked within their respective 17 divisions, so that the top 64, 32 or 16 archers — depending on the division — can advance to head-to-head elimination matches.

From those matches, the top eight or four archers from each division will advance to the final shoot-up rounds.  In the Olympic Recurve Men’s division only the top 32 archers made the cut.

In the qualification round, D’Amour finished 8th out of 70 archers in his division.  He tied with Michele Frangilli, who is a three-time Olympic medalist from Italy, with a score of 607.  Frangilli was ranked 7th based on a higher number of 11s scored in qualifications.

In the eliminations, D’Amour beat Camerin Pickering of Bermuda 124 to 116 in the round of 16.  In the round of 8, D’Amour faced Atanu Das a two-time Olympian from India and presently ranked number 10 in the world. D’Amour beat Das 120 to 116.  Advancing the quarter-finals,  D’Amour defeated Glenn Thomas of the United States 122-118.  Thomas had just defeated Brady Ellison, the world number 1 and 3-time United States’ Olympian, in the round of 8, with a score of 122-121.

Following qualifications, archers are ranked within their respective 17 divisions, so that the top 64, 32 or 16 archers — depending on the division — can advance to head-to-head elimination matches. From those matches, the top eight or four archers from each division will advance to the final shoot-up rounds.  In the Olympic Recurve Men’s Division, the top four participated in the final shoot-up.  D’Amour was ranked number 2, one point behind Jack Williams of the United States.  Williams was the 2021 World Archery World Cup Finals Champion and ranked number 8 in the World.

The finals matches start with the lowest ranked archer competing against the next lowest ranked archer. The winner advances to shoot against the archer ranked just above them until someone competes against the top-ranked archer for the top prize.

Position Athlete/ 11s: Scoring/ Summary

In the head-to-head matches, Frangilli defeated Broeksma 126-114.  D’Amour then faced Frangilli.  Frangilli prevailed in a close match 121-118.  In the finals, Williams and Frangilli were tied 119-119, forcing a one arrow shoot off.  Williams shot an 11 to Frangilli’s 10, winning the match.

Nicholas D’Amour is now heading to Las Vegas for The Vegas Shoot, which is known as the largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournament in the world. The event brings together nearly 4,000 archers from around the globe ranging from beginner archers to Olympic champions. Senior, youth, compound or recurve, The Vegas Shoot welcomes all demographics and shooting styles. The three-day competition features the traditional 3-spot 20-yard Vegas Round that made this tournament famous.

In his Division Championship-Male Recurve, D’Amour will be competing against 30 of the top archers in the world. Archers will collect elite ranking points towards qualifying for the Indoor Archery World Series Finals, which are held on Saturday night at The Vegas Shoot.

The top 16 archers in each category – compound men, compound women, recurve men and recurve women – will shoot for the titles, which are now the highest indoor accolade awarded by World Archery.
