Great Results for Virgin Islanders Running in Cross Country on Mainland and V.I.

Michelle Smith, a high school sophomore at Montverde Academy, competed with her cross- country team in the 3.1 mile in the Regional Championship (FHSAA 2A Region 2) in Melbourne, Fla., on Nov. 5. Smith placed 6th in her region and 1st for her team in a time of 19:34. She helped her team to a 4th place finish in their region team-standing.

The team-standing qualified the Montverde Academy for State Championship in Tallahassee, Fla., on Nov. 12. Smith finished 19th out of 217 athletes in the Florida State Cross Country finals in a time of 19:27. Smith was the first runner for her team to cross the finish line, and she helped her team to a 16th place in the team-standing.

The State Championship completed a successful cross-country season for Michelle Smith.

Ursinus College Junior Rachel Conhoff competed at the NCAA Metro Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Glassboro, N.J. Conhoff ran the 6K race in a personal record time of 22:30.06, finishing 6th place overall and 1st place for her team. Conhoff’s 6th place finish qualified her for the NCAA Cross-Country Championship, which has not been achieved by a Ursinus Women’s Team member since 2008. Conhoff’s team finished 8th in the team-standing in the regional championship, which is the highest team finish at the regionals in the program’s history.

Conhoff will compete next Nov. 20 at the 2021 NCAA Division III Cross-Country Championship in Louisville, Ky.

St. Croix

The Virgin Island’s cross-country season on St. Croix continued with races on Wednesday, Nov. 3 and Wednesday, Nov. 10, on the newly created course with the help of VI Paving and the Department of Agriculture, which assisted the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation (VITF).

In the 2-Mile Boys’ race by Kaeden Gleason, a freshman at Good Hope Country Day School, he continued his winning streak by finishing 1st in both the 2nd and the 3rd races.

Kirra Lambert, a freshman at Good Hope Country Day, did the same in the 2-Mile Girls’ race by winning both the 2nd and 3rd race and lowering her course record from 13:44 to 13:22 in the 2nd race.

In the 5K race, the male overall winner was Michael Dizon-Bumann, a senior at Good Hope Country Day. He set a new course record in 17:26 in the second cross-country race, breaking the old course record held by Malilque Smith in 19:32.08 by more than 2 minutes. In the 3rd race, Dizon-Bumann finished 1st overall with a time of 17:47.

On the female side in the second 5K race, Amy Roberts was the 1st female finisher in a time 24:43, and Alexandra Bhola, a senior at Good Hope Country Day, finished first in the high school division in 35:09. In the 3rd 5K race, Megan Lambert finished first in 22:57, and Bhola finished 1st in the high school division.

The 4th Cross Country Race on St. Croix will be on Nov. 17.
