J. Benton Construction LLC, a construction leader in the U.S. Virgin Islands, participated in the 6th annual “National Fall Prevention Safety Stand-Down,” a voluntary workplace event with an emphasis on worksite safety and fall prevention through toolbox talks and jobsite safety activities. This is the second year that J. Benton has participated in the program; each J. Benton job site on St. Croix and St. Thomas completed this program reconfirming the company’s commitment to supporting safety initiatives.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) joined with other occupational safety organizations to encourage businesses nationwide to participate in the National Safety Stand-Down during May 6-10. This event provides training on safety with a special focus on preventing and eliminating falls on job sites — the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry.

During Safety Stand-Down events, work paused at J. Benton sites so that all personnel could participate in a series of exercises reinforcing the importance of preventing falls, avoiding hazards and using protective methods. There was also a review of J. Benton’s safety policies, goals and expectations.

J. Benton Superintendent Dan Kinney, who helped lead the safety instruction at his worksite, said, “Safety trainings like these help us discuss the ‘near misses’ and how to be better and be safer and eliminate the hazards as much as possible.”

“It’s everyone’s responsibility to come together and help each other,” Kinney said.

As a general contractor, J. Benton Construction specializes in all phases of construction projects including design/build and construction management for commercial, industrial, institutional, civil and custom residential jobs. J. Benton takes pride in its responsibility to ensure workplace safety on all of its projects, to their family of employees and the community of the Virgin Islands where they live.
