On Friday, Sept. 14, Sen. Dwayne M. DeGraff hosted a ceremony to pay tribute to Irvin “Brownie” Brown Sr. for his contribution to the Virgin Islands community. The ceremony was held at the former USO, now the David A. Canton Building.
In June, the V.I. Legislature approved Bill No. 32-0146, sponsored by Sen. DeGraff to rename the portion of General Gade that runs from the intersection of Veterans Drive up to the intersection of Silke Gade Irvin “Brownie” Brown Sr. Street in honor of the local icon. Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp later signed it into law.
An official dedication ceremony had been planned for 4 p.m., Friday, but had been postponed earlier in the day by the Office of the Governor.
“I decided to go ahead and host a ceremony because Brownie and members of his family had already traveled to the territory just for the occasion,” DeGraff said. “I did not want it to be a wasted trip for the family.”
Those in attendance were given the opportunity to give tributes to Mr. Brown and to take photos with him near the sign that bears his name.
DeGraff said, “I am pleased that Brownie was able to witness this honor in his lifetime and to share in this moment with his family, friends and loved ones. I would like to thank all those who made it possible.”
