Man Stabbed In Cruz Bay While Attempting to Break Up Fight

Akil GumbsA man was treated Wednesday at the Schneider Regional Medical Center for a knife wound he received while attempting to break up a fight in Cruz Bay.

According to the V.I. Police Department, at about 3:07 p.m. Wednesday a man, whose name was not released by police, told officers he was leaving a St. John business when he saw a couple walking in front of him, and saw the man swing a fist at the woman. He stepped between the female and the man. The victim told police the suspect took out a kitchen knife from the back of his waist and stabbed him in the abdomen.

The victim underwent surgery at Schneider. The police statement did not report on his condition.

The suspect, 35-year-old Akil Gumbs, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault. He was remanded to Bureau of Corrections.
