Weather Service Extends Flash Flood Watch for Territory

The U.S. National Weather Service’s San Juan Forecast Office has extended the Flash Flood Watch to 6 p.m. Monday for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

According to a Sunday morning news release, the strong tropical wave, designated Invest 97 L, will continue to bring showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds across the territory and Puerto Rico Sunday and Monday.

Forecasters expect the tropical wave to move across the local islands with showers and thunderstorms expected to increase as Sunday goes on, and spread across the rest of the region through Sunday night and Monday morning. The most active period is expected to be from through Monday morning.

Rainfall totals between are expected to be between 2 and 4 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Localized flash flooding and landslides are likely in areas of persistent heavy rainfall, the weather forecasters warned.

Mona Barnes, director of the V.I, Territoria Emergency Management Agency, encouraged the public to continue monitoring this system and weather updates for possible flash flood warnings.

The National Hurricane Center said Invest 97 L continues to be disorganized, with little chance of further developing. Satellite data and surface observations indicate no signs of a closed surface circulation. Some gradual development of this system is possible during the next couple of days, after it has passed through the territory and reached the western Caribbean Sea.
