Saturday’s kickoff of the 2014 Carnival musical schedule saw 10 calypsonians battle their way to the final out of a field of 17. The 10 will vie with defending Calypso King Souljah for the 2014 Calypso Monarch title when the finals are held at 8 p.m. April 24 in the Lionel Roberts Stadium.
Saturday’s elimination was held in the Bud Light Platinum Calypso Elimination Tent at the Crown Bay Center, according to the news release from the Virgin Islands Carnival Committee.
In the first round, King Kan, Sarrow, General Val, Solemnity, Incredible Shark, Singing Jackie, Mighty Pat, King Spade and Super T squared off. Then King Generic, Broc Lee, Ras Nisha, King Paul, X Man, Toby Dee and Tumba competed in round two.
The calypsonians delivered songs ranging from comical to uplifting, from political commentary to honoring heroes.
The finalists selected to compete for the Carnival 2014 Calypso Monarch title against King Souljah are: Singing Jackie, Mighty Pat, Broc Lee, Solemnity, King Kan, Sarrow, King Spade, Super T, Toby Dee and Ras Nisha.
