Lakers, Rockers are NBBA Saturday Night Winners

Lakers forward Charles Moorehead rams home a monster two-handed dunk. The Lakers and the Rockers won a pair of highly contested games in the New Breed Basketball Association 2013 summer basketball league Saturday.

Since the four teams playing are all in the lower half of the league standings, only a sparse crowd was on hand at the Ronald Charles gymnasium at St. Croix Central High. But they were rewarded for their loyalty with a pair of games that went down to the wire.

Rockers 90-Dread Is 81

In the early game, 40 minutes of regulation time were not enough to decide a winner. The Rockers and Dread Is went to overtime deadlocked at 72.

In the overtime the Rockers, the league’s youngest team, outscored the Dread Is 18-9 behind eight points from Amani Miller and six from Tecoi Felix. Felix finished with a game-high 21 points while Miller netted 19. Omar Krigger and Tyrick McMillan contributed 16 and 10 points respectively for the Rockers in the upset victory.

For Dread Is, Jabal Petersen netted 19 points, Gary McNeal had 16 and Assad Vigo and Kareem Harry finished with 10 points apiece in a losing cause.

Lakers 83, Legacy 81

In game two, a shorthanded Lakers squad, sparked by 11 third-period points from point guard Rashawn “Rooster” Williams, used a 28-18 in that frame to take their first lead of a tightly contested game. Then they held off Legacy down the wire for a hard-fought 83-81 victory.

Legacy dominated play for most of the first half, outscoring the Lakers 17-11 in the opening period. However the Lakers, playing with only one man on the bench, began to show some life near the end on the second quarter and went into the locker room at the half trailing by just four, 37-33.

The Lakers third-quarter surge saw them lead by as many as nine points, but Legacy rallied in the fourth and actually retook the lead at one point. However a visibly fatigued Rooster Williams took his team on his back, scoring eight points in the final period, including the game-winning basket, to carry them on to the 83-81 victory.

Williams finished with a game-high 28 points and eight assist. He was supported by teammates Terrell Harris with 22 points and 11 rebounds, Charles Moorehead’s 14 points and 13 rebounds. Emani Chinoazye finished with 11 points.

For Legacy their top defensive player, Kaief Newton, had a breakout offensive night, finishing with a team-high 22 points. Sean Tutein and Chris Floyd netted 12 apiece and Kyle Davis finished with 11.
