The St. Croix Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will hold its annual Feedthe HomelessProject from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Anne Heyliger vegetable market in Frederiksted.
For over 10 years, the sorority has alternated from Frederiksted to Christiansted each year to serve free meals to the homeless as part of its ongoing commitment to serve the St. Croix homeless community. Meals will include choices of chicken, fish and roast pork, with sides to include macaroni and cheese, rice, stuffing, vegetables, rolls and soft drinks.
In December, it sponsored a canned food drive at Cost-U-Less to benefit Catholic Charities of the Virgin Islands, which routinely serves meals to the homeless.
This initiative is one of the St. Croix Alumnae Chapter’s signature projects and is an ongoing service component in commemoration of its annual Founders Day ceremonies. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded on Jan. 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 envisioned women. It now boasts a sisterhood of over 250,000 predominately black college- educated women committed to public service and with over 900 chapters worldwide.
Funding for the meals is provided each year by individual donations from chapter members. Chapter members prepare and serve the meals with the assistance of participants from its Delta GEMS program, which is designed to educate and mentor young girls by preparing them for leadership roles in the future.
