Navy Seaman Thomas E. Osowski/St. Croix
Jan. 12, 2012 (Fleet Hometown News Center)–Navy Seaman Thomas E. Osowski, son of Joan Y. and David R. Osowski of Christiansted, V. I., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Osowski completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Its distinctly ‘Navy flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.
Osowski is a 2011 graduate of The Manor School of Christiansted, V. I.

Jan. 13, 2012 (Fleet Hometown News Center)–Navy Lt. Elroy L. Newton, son of Althea Matthew of Frederiksted, V. I., recently retired after 23 years of active-duty service in the Navy while serving as assistant operations officer, Training Support Center, RTC Great Lakes, Ill.
Throughout his 23 year career, Newton’s past shipboard tours include assignments aboard USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG-49), USS Nicholson (DD-982), and USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). In 2001, Newton was commissioned as a limited duty officer (LDO).
During his career, Newton received several personal awards and medals, including the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (fifth award), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (third award) and Meritorious Service Medal.
He and his family will be residing in Charleston, S.C. He is a 1987 graduate of St. Croix High School of Kingshill, V. I. and joined the Navy in August 1988.

Jan. 17, 2012 (Defense Media Activity) — Air Force Airman Alissa B. Lawrence graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Lawrence is the daughter of Carolyn Christian of Jode Gade, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
She is a 2009 graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem, N.C.
