Two People Found Dead After Fire

Police on St. Croix are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a male and female who were found dead Monday night in Christiansted, following a structural fire.

According to police, the fire occurred at about 9:30 p.m. in an abandoned building on Company Street. Firefighters from the Estate Richmond Fire Station were extinguishing the flames in an outer room when police officers came upon two unresponsive people in the bathroom.

Emergency medical technicians said that the bodies had no vital signs. Police believe that the deceased may have been homeless and living in the building, according to information they received.

A preliminary inspection of the bodies did not reveal any obvious signs of trauma; however, an autopsy will reveal the exact cause of death.

Police have not released the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.
