From Dec. 7-9, students from across St. Thomas will engage in a Youth Summit to create a ‘Youth Agenda for Legislative Action.’ Students will examine issues facing youth and the Virgin Islands generally, and will examine and debate various solutions to the problems. They will then write policy proposals, vote on those proposals and, ultimately, present their agenda to policy and decision makers in the Virgin Islands.
The summit will begin on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Sugar Bay Resort. The students will research their issues, examine efforts already in place to solve the problem and work to propose policy ideas to address their concerns. On Friday, Dec. 9, students will present their ‘Agenda for Action’ to members of the legislature, educators and other policymakers.
The event is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs and is being led by the Close Up Foundation, a civic education organization that strives to involve youth in the political decision making process through educational programs.
