YWCA Invites Women’s Groups to a Celebration of the Yellow Elder

The YWCA of the U.S. Virgin Islands invites organizations to participate in a celebration of girls and women on the wings of my sisters: A Yellow Elder Celebration About the Yellow Elder. The celebration will be held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (set-up begins at 9 a.m.) on Saturday, April 2, at Emancipation Garden.

Yellow elder, also called ginger Thomas, is the official flower of the Virgin Islands and is a popular shrub because of its outstanding flower, which produces brilliant yellow blossoms that are trumpet-shaped in appearance and grow in large clusters. Known for its resilience and ability to thrive even as the weather shifts, blooms of the yellow elder smell like champagne and attract honey bees. A tea made from the leaves is used to reduce fevers and is said to strengthen a woman’s body following childbirth. The same tea is also commonly used to treat diabetes. Women across the territory reflect a wide range of natural beauty like the yellow elder, perform with a spirit of excellence and creativity in all sectors, serve as stalwarts in the community, and demonstrate tenacity and resilience. These are the qualities that this event will celebrate.
Community, faith, girl and women serving organizations are invited to participate in this gathering to celebrate girls and women. Organizations are invited to set up display tables detailing their programs and services, particularly those focused on the personal, career, physical, financial, mental, spiritual and family development of girls and women. Also, organizations are encouraged to participate on the program for the day and share their talents and presentations celebrating women. These can be vocals, either solo or group, musical selections, individual or groups of musicians, poetry readings, dance selections, or dramatic skits which honor women, girls and their contributions to society.
Vendors are invited to sell their wares. The cost of a vendor table is $25.
For more information or to register a group for participation, call the YWCA of the V.I. at 776-1592 or 626-9804 or e-mail usviywca@gmail.com by March 21.
