Upward Bound Offering Tutorials to Cancryn Eighth Graders

The University of the Virgin Islands Upward Bound Program on the St. Thomas campus will offer free tutorials in mathematics, science and English to eighth graders attending the Addelita Cancryn Junior High School. The Upward Bound After-School Tutoring Assistance Program will begin from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, and will continue on Mondays and Wednesdays for 25 weeks. The program is designed to reinforce concepts taught in the classroom, which will serve to augment the students’ education. Instructors will be qualified to teach in the particular subject area, and tutors will be advanced UVI students who are members of the National Society of Black Engineers. A total of 40 students will be accepted into the program. There will be a four-to-one student/tutor ratio.
Students must be in need of academic assistance in mathematics, science or English, based on their teachers’ recommendations. Parents should contact their student’s mathematics, science or English teacher to determine eligibility. Applications are available at the Addelita Cancryn Jr. H.S. counselor’s office and must be completed by each student and his/her parent or guardian.
The Upward Bound After-School Tutoring Assistance Program is sponsored by UVI and the Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. For more information about the program, contact Ophelia Wadsworth at 693-1130.
