New, Transfer Student Orientation for Spring Semester Continues Orientation schedules for new and transfer students for the spring 2010 semester are now available for both campuses on the Admissions Section of the UVI Web site – www.uvi.edu. Academic advisement and registration is set for Thursday, Jan. 7. Late registration and registration for non-matriculated/non-degree students takes place on Friday, Jan. 8. Spring semester classes will begin on Monday, Jan. 11.

UVI Libraries Observing Intersession Hours; Regular Hours Begin Jan. 11 UVI’s libraries are observing Intersession hours through Jan. 10. They will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 9 and 10. Regular library hours will begin on Monday, Jan. 11, as follows:
8 a.m. to 10 p.m. – Mondays through Thursdays; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. – Fridays; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Saturdays; and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Sundays
PRAXIS Exam to be Offered on St. Thomas Campus on Jan. 9 The PRAXIS Exams will be administered in the Nursing Education Building on UVI’s St. Thomas campus at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9. Only persons who have registered with ETS will be tested. No walk-ins are allowed. Call 693-1462 with further questions.
VI SBDC to Offer Seminars on Surety Bonding on St. Croix and St. Thomas UVI’s Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center (VI SBDC) will present seminars on surety bonding at its training facilities on St. Croix at Sunshine Mallon Thursday, Jan. 14, and on St. Thomas at Nisky Center on Friday, Jan. 15. The St. Croix seminar is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the St. Thomas session is from 10 a.m. to noon. The presenter is Steve Golia, executive vice president of IBCS Group Inc. Admission is free and pre-registration is required. Seating is limited.

Agrifest 2010 Organizers to Vendors, Visitors: Plan Ahead Organizers of the 39th St. Croix Agriculture and Food Fair are urging the public to make plans now to attend this year’s fair scheduled for Feb. 13 to 15. Vendors, farmers and exhibitors are being reminded that display space is in high demand for the largest fair of its kind in the Caribbean. V.I. Historians to Hold Annual Meeting at UVI Jan. 16 UVI’s Division of Humanities and Social Sciences will cosponsor the 24th annual conference of the Society of Virgin Islands Historians from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the at Great Hall of the Northwest Wing Annex on the university’s St. Croix campus. The theme for the annual meeting is “Virgin Islands Crossroads: Managing our Cultural Resources.”
Presenters include Dr. Jeannette A. Bastian, associate professor and director of the Archives at Simmons College in Boston, Mass. Her paper, “‘Play Mas’: Carnival in the Archives and the Archives in Carnival,” will be followed by a workshop. Cultural production workers wishing to participate in her blog and a post-lecture on-site workshop (“Community and Culture”) at UVI, may contact Dr. Bastian at jeannette.bastian@simmons.edu. Americans with Disabilities Training Available on St. Croix, St. Thomas Interested members of the UVI community are invited to participate in free Americans with Disabilities Act training opportunities scheduled on St. Croix and St. Thomas in January. The training is offered in association with Cornell University’s Northeast ADA Center. Sessions are available on St. Croix on Jan. 25 and 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Carambola Beach Resort & Spa, and on St. Thomas on Jan. 28 and 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort.

Reichhold Center Offers Sneak Peek at Soweto Gospel Choir The Reichhold Center for the Arts invites the public to a sneak peek at the Soweto Gospel Choir featured on the home page of Reichhold’s Web site: www.reichholdcenter.com.
The choir will launch its U.S. tour with a performance at the Reichhold Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15. The choir, based in South Africa, will perform a series of traditional American gospel songs, along with upbeat African freedom songs. It is noted for its explosive harmonies and exuberant choreography. Performing in colorful African attire, the choir’s presentation is stunning. In 2007 the it received a Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album, followed by a 2008 Grammy Award for its third album, “African Spirit.”

UVI Students Invited to Participate in Model U.N. Competition in 2010 UVI is seeking students interested in participating in the third annual UVI Model U.N. Competition, set for March 18 on the St. Thomas campus. The competition is open to all UVI students who have taken or who plan to take any political science course at the university.
Students who participate will experience a wide variety of opportunities, including representing their campus, gaining knowledge of the world, improving their public speaking, sharpening problem solving skills, learning conflict resolution, improving research and writing skills, and making a difference in the world.
The competition is cosponsored by Rotary Clubs in the Virgin Islands and the UVI Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. For more information, contact Dr. Kula Francis at 692-4065 or kfranci@uvi.edu.
NSE Applications Available from Counseling Services Office
Students interested in studying abroad through the National Student Exchange (NSE) program may obtain the NSE application and directory booklet from the UVI Counseling Services office on the St. Thomas campus. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year. Interested students are encouraged to start the application process as early as possible.
