Students, Public Invited to Join ‘Video Chats’ with UVI Professor on Expedition

St. Thomas high school students and members of the general public interested in deep-ocean geological research are invited to attend live Wednesday morning “video chats” with a UVI professor conducting ocean research in the Sea of Japan. The video conference sessions will begin at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30, and continue on subsequent Wednesday mornings through Oct. 28. The conferences are held in Room T-101 in the Teacher Education Building on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. High school groups requiring transportation assistance will be accommodated.
Nasseer Idrisi, Ph.D., a research biological oceanographer and professor in UVI’s Marine and Environmental Science master’s degree program, is participating in an international research project that is studying an ocean plateau located about 900 miles east of Japan. Dr. Idrisi began a series of video chats with UVI students on Sept. 19. A photo is available on the UVI Today… photo blog.

Administration and Finance Component Meeting Scheduled for Sept. 29
UVI’s Administration and Finance Component has scheduled a component meeting for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the first-floor conference room in the Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus. The UVI community is advised that component offices will be closed during the meeting period. They will reopen at 1 p.m. Individual offices will post notices on office doors to alert visitors. The following offices are included: Administration and Finance (third floor), Accounting (second floor), Human Resources (first floor), and Purchasing (second floor).
Forums on State-Side Graduate Education Opportunities Offered by UVI
Students and other persons interested in pursuing graduate education in the fields of engineering, mathematics, pharmaceutical sciences, science, technology and other science-related disciplines are invited to participate in the Big Ten+ Graduate School Forum, which will be held on UVI’s St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The forum will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. on the St. Croix campus, in Room 716 of the Evans Center. To schedule individual appointments with the representatives, contact Doris Farrington-Hepburn or Anyha Lord in the Counseling and Career Services Center at 692-4187 or 692-4180.

UVI Opens Special Scholarship Applications Period Through Oct. 9
The UVI Scholarship Committee has announced a special application period for students seeking scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. All undergraduate students currently enrolled at UVI, who meet the eligibility requirements, are encouraged to apply. The special application period will run through Oct. 9, 2009. The announcement of recipients will be made by Oct. 31.
To be considered for scholarship awards, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents or indicate their F-1 status. They must also be full-time, matriculated UVI students, not be receiving aid in excess of the cost of attendance, and submit one letter of recommendation.

St. Croix Psychology Club Offers GRE Study Group
The St. Croix Psychology Club invites anyone on the St. Croix campus who is interested in graduate school to participate in a GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Study Group that meets every Friday from noon to 4 p.m., in Evans Center, Room 505. President Hall to Address Legal Services of the V.I. Luncheon on Oct. 20
UVI President David Hall will be the keynote speaker at the 40th Anniversary Commemoration Luncheon for the Legal Services of the Virgin Islands Inc., at noon on Thursday, Oct. 20. The luncheon will take place in the Great Hall, in the North West Wing on UVI’s St. Croix campus. Donations are $40. For more information contact Richard Austin at 773-2626.
10th V.I. Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference Set for May
The 10th Virgin Islands Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference has been scheduled for May 6 and 7, 2010, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa on St. Thomas. The conference – titled: Changing Direction and Directing Change: Solutions 2 Nonpoint Pollution – aims to involve all sectors of society. Those invited include government and non-government association officials, scientists and educators, students, community groups and homeowners associations, construction and boating industry representatives, farmers and vendors.
The conference is sponsored by the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources, UVI’s Cooperative Extension Service and Marine Advisory Service, the V.I. Resource Conservation and Development Council, the V.I. Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Committee, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Calling All Student Models; UVI Photography Shoot Planned
If you’ve always wanted to be in pictures, this is your time to shine. The UVI Public Relations Office is planning an October photography shoot and is looking for male and female students who’d like to take part in this volunteer opportunity. At least 10 students are needed for volunteer daytime modeling assignments on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses. Audition head shots and photography release forms can be obtained by visiting the UVI Public Relations Office on the St. Thomas campus (ACC Building, Room 229) weekdays between the hours of noon and 3 p.m.
Call the Public Relations Office at 693-1059 to arrange for headshots to be taken on the St. Croix campus.
UVI Bookstores on St. Croix and St. Thomas to Close for Inventory
UVI’s bookstores on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses are planning breaks to allow for staffers to take inventory beginning this week. The St. Croix store will be closed from Sept. 24-30. On St. Thomas, the store will be closed from Sept. 25-30.
Students, faculty, staff, department heads, division heads, heads of government agencies and the general public are asked to take note and to conduct the necessary business with the bookstores before or after the affected dates. Both UVI Bookstores will resume normal operations on Oct. 1.
Renowned AIDS Activist to Speak at Oct. 2nd Conference on St. Thomas Campus
Emmy Award-winning AIDS activist Rae Lewis-Thornton will be the featured speaker during a day-long conference on HIV/AIDS titled “Youth Taking Control” that will be held on UVI’s St. Thomas campus on Friday, Oct. 2. All UVI students and high school seniors are invited to participate. The goal is to increase awareness of the risk of drug use and HIV/AIDS. The conference is sponsored by the Office of the Associate Campus Executive Administrator for Student Affairs.

Coastweek Beach Cleanup Efforts to Continue Through Oct. 10
Members of the Virgin Islands community began their observance of the international Coastweeks beach cleanup effort with a cleanup at Brewers Bay Beach on UVI’s St. Thomas campus on Sept. 19. Other cleanups will take place throughout the territory through Oct. 10. Organized globally by the Ocean Conservancy, the USVI Coastweeks effort is coordinated locally by UVI, the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources’ Coastal Zone Management Division, Friends of the V.I. National Park and the V.I. Waste Management Authority. The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) is organizing Coastweeks cleanups on St. Croix.

The Caribbean Writer Publishes 23rd Issue
The Caribbean Writer, an international literary anthology published by the University of the Virgin Islands, announces the publication of its 23rd issue. The volume contains new poetry by Edwidge Danticat and an interview with Kamau Brathwaite by Opal Palmer Adisa. The volume is dedicated to Professor Marvin E. Williams, who stepped down as editor this year.
The Caribbean Writer is available at local bookstores on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, and at the UVI bookstores on both islands. VIUCEDD, WTJX to Screen ‘Including Samuel’ on Oct. 2 at UVI
A free screening of the moving documentary film “Including Samuel” will be held as a disability and diversity event at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2, on the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus. The event is sponsored by the Virgin Islands Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD) and Public TV station WTJX Channel 12.
The movie details the work of photojournalist Dan Habib, who rarely thought to include children with disabilities in his work until he had a son, Samuel, eight years ago. Now he thinks about inclusion every day. Habib documented his family’s efforts to include Samuel, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, in every facet of their lives. The effort has transformed each of them. The film has been screened at universities, national conferences, public television stations and independent theatres across the country. CELL to Offer Basic Work Skills Program for V.I. Residents
A newly program designed to help Virgin Islands residents improve basic work skills has been developed by UVI’s Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center. The course will be offered from 6- 9 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning on Oct. 1, at the CELL Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus.
Participants will learn effective problem solving, critical thinking skills, and techniques to enhance reading comprehension. They will also be guided on ways to improve writing, math and test-taking skills. The goal is to help individuals pass employment entrance and promotion exams. The program is also ideal for anyone interested in enhancing their reading, writing or basic math skills. Financial assistance may be provided for qualified individuals through the V.I. Department of Labor, and V.I. veterans may enroll in the class free of charge.
