TWO SHOOTINGS, ONE FATAL, ON ST. THOMAS

Jan. 18, 2004 – Few details were available Saturday night on two shootings on St. Thomas, just minutes apart from each other. In one case, the shooting became the second murder of the year; in the other incident, the victim was rushed by ambulance to Roy L. Schneider Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.
Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Hannah confirmed that the victim of a shooting in Lindbergh Bay died as a result of the gunshot injuries. Residents of the area said they heard at least five shots. The shooting occurred just off the roadway that leads from the Julian Jackson Drive into Lindbergh Bay and a stone's throw away from the Michael J. Kirwan Terrace public housing community. As of late Saturday night, police had no suspects in the shooting and did not recover the weapon used.
"It is still unclear whether the victim was female or male and what the circumstances were that led to the shooting," Hannah said Saturday night. "Major Crime detectives are on the scene along with investigators and forensic agents … they will determine what went down last night; we will know more as the investigation takes shape."
The fatal shooting was reported to the V.I. Police Department at around 9:30 pm. At about the same time, officers from the Muriel C. Newton Command, Zone "C," were dispatched to a shooting in the Wintberg neighborhood. Hannah could provide few details of that shooting incident other than to confirm that the victim was rushed to the Schneider Hospital for treatment of his injuries. One source described the unnamed victim as being critically wounded.
Also responding to both shooting scenes were technicians from Emergency Medical Services and St. Thomas Rescue volunteers.
The Saturday night fatal shooting brings to two the number of killings in the territory this year. Both have occurred on St. Thomas. On New Year's Day, Isiah Pereira, 17, was stabbed to death allegedly by his brother, Glenford Prince. Prince remains incarcerated in lieu of $600,000 bail set by Judge Ive A. Swan during an advice-of-rights and probable cause hearing in Territorial Court on Jan. 2. (See St. Thomas starts new year with homicide No. 1.)
