SENATORS LEARN NEW VOTING SYSTEM

The senators and senators-elect of the incoming 24th Legislature spent Monday learning the yea's and nea's of a new automated voting system they are expected to use when the body is sworn-in next month.
The Automated Municipal Voting System (AMVS), which carried a $57,000 price tag, will allow senators to vote electronically. The vote will be displayed on in house video monitors and archived at the same time.
Votes can also be made via electronic mail which could eliminate a lot of the inter-island travel for meetings of the Senate's standing committees.
Another feature of the automated system is a "right to speak" button which will turn on or open the speakers' microphones for the allotted time and then shut them off automatically when the debate time expires.
The system will be connected with MTI Technology Corp.offices on the mainland– the creator of the system that was installed at the V.I. Legislature in the last two months – to correct any glitches in the automated system.
