The 2009 Life Style Festival/Healthy Encores Health Awareness Day took place on St. Croix, Saturday, July 18, at the Sunshine Mall and will continue this Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Tutu Park Mall. There will be free blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes screenings as well as kidney, eye and HIV testing. This year, the festival offers free prostate cancer testing administered by Pavia Hospital.
Health Awareness day also features food demonstrations, nutrition experts, and all kinds of fitness activities for the entire family as well as entertainment and giveaways. This event is free and open to the public.
At both Health Awareness Days, winning students from the Charlotte Amalie and Central High Schools who participated in an essay contest sponsored by IBM will receive their awards: IBM/Lenovo laptops. Students were asked to explain how education and technology come together to make life and living a good experience. Entries were judge by a panel of IBM employees.
The LifeStyle Festival/ Healthy Encores president and CEO Lorraine Milliner, a St. Thomas native, lives in Baltimore, Maryland, and is a radio announcer at Magic 95.9fm, which is a Radio One Inc. station. Her show, The Quiet Fire, is the No. 1 show for adults. Lolo said, ”I’ve been blessed. The festival was founded as a way of giving back to my Virgin Islands community.” The Lifestyle Festival/Healthy Encores staff is made up of Virgin Islanders living both locally and abroad.
The festival will also present the “Stop the Violence” show from 8 p.m. to midnight, on Saturday, July 25, at Coral World in Smith Bay. Performing live will be BV and Drastic, Jugga and, fresh from his MTV debut, St. Thomas’s own Paebak. The show will be hosted by MTV’S Buttahman, also a native of St. Thomas. Admission is $10 at the door.
Cheryl Francis, the wife of Lt. Gov. Gregory Francis, will speak at the show representing Stop the Bleeding, a non-profit territorial organization focused on collaborating with like-minded organizations to uplift V.I. youth and families.
