Dear Source:
I just read Renata Platenberg's letter. I was very gratified to see someone who cares, is knowledgeable and believes in helping to protect our local wildlife from the dangers of our indiscriminate and sometimes cruel lack of consideration for our environment, our wildlife and our endangered species. I hope that everyone will take the opportunity to read the newsletters and learn from them. They should be a part of every classroom's reading material. What a wonderful opportunity for the island's children to learn about their environment and how to continue to help protect it so that it may be there for their kids and the generations to come.
What I do not get is how our local government & especially DPNR can get away with not following the guidelines set out by the Federal Government's Endangered Species Act with regard to rampant building and disregard for zoning on St. Thomas's East End and in particular, the effect it is having on the tree boa which they are directed to protect.
Maybe the Federal Government should be requested to look into their compliance issues or lack, thereof.
