Smith, Harper Take Stamina Sports Duathlon Titles

Oct. 16, 2007 – The sport of duathlon made its return to St. Croix on Sunday with the Stamina Sports Duathlon. The event started with a 1.5-mile cross country run around the grounds of Cramers Park, followed by a 14-mile bike around the East End of St. Croix, and then finished with another 1.5-mile run.
Duathlon has been absent for 10 years, but the field was filled with experienced triathletes eager to race without the standard starting swim leg.
Shane Duncan, one of the territory's fastest runners, led the field through the first run, opening a 45-second lead on DeWayne Smith. Smith, who raced during the VI Cycling Federation's 2007 season, overtook Duncan on the hilly bike portion and returned to the transition area with over a minute lead, then gamely held off the fast closing Duncan for the win in 1:08:05. Troy Holloway was third overall, and first in his age group.
Noted local runner Theresa Harper was never challenged in the women's field, and finished over 10 minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Her winning time was 1:17:35. Dulcie Crowther beat Elizabeth Nurnberger by less than a minute for second place.
The next race on the multi-sport calendar will be the Caribbean Classic Triathlon, to be held on Nov. 18, at the Buccaneer Hotel.
