Dear Source,
Thanks to the VI Source for reporting the outrageous behavior of a delegate to the Constitutional Convention.
Every single one of us should be incensed that Adelbert Bryan allegedly made racist remarks against East Indians at a session of the Constitutional Convention. I have so many questions. Why were there 8 missing delegates? Why are they not taking their jobs seriously? Why did convention President Gerard James not know if he had authority to remove Mr. Bryan from the meeting or at least censure his actions? Maybe he needs to research his duties and obligations as President before the next meeting. Next, thank you delegate Wilma Monsanto for leaving the room. However, I question why every single person did not leave the room? Does that mean that everyone in the room found the tirade acceptable? And then I learn in a VI Source article that at a session in April this same person, Adelbert Bryan, made threats against a white reporter. My God, what it going on here? Is this the elephant in the living room that no one will talk about, no one will address? If tables were turned and racial remarks and threats by East Indians and whites were made against Adelbert Bryan in public would there be an outcry? You bet there would and rightly so. There is no place for racism anywhere in the world and especially here and especially now. It is 2008. The main purpose of the convention is to expand people's rights. If you listen to and believe Adelbert Bryan you would think that these expanded rights will be for a select few. Tax dollars are being used to fund the Constitutional Convention. My tax dollars among others. But I might be excluded from certain rights? That's it. Disband the Convention. Use the time to have a dialogue about whether we even want a new Constitution. I beg Governor deJongh to veto the $200,000 appropriation. This convention does not deserve another cent to fund it.
Sincerely,
Sharon E. A. Hupprich
