FOUL ODOR ENDS CLASSES AT NOON FRIDAY AT IEKHS

Oct. 3, 2003 — Classes came to an abrupt end at 12:30 p.m. Friday for students of the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School due to what school officials called an "unknown foul odor."
William Frett, insular superintendent of schools for the St. Thomas-St. John district, said a joint investigation was being conducted by the Education Department and the Public Works Department into the matter.
Calls to Public Works Friday were not returned.
Two students from Kean, who did not wish to identify themselves, told the Source that a sewer line that burst near the school's cafeteria was probably responsible for the foul odor.
Assistant Principal Jubilani Rees agreed Friday that the odor was more than likely due to a sewage problem. Rees said that school officials were told by Frett that the Education Department would "pool its resources" to resolve the situation over the weekend.
"I have every indication that classes will resume Monday," Rees said.
