Oct. 5, 2003 — Eleven 2003 graduates of V.I. public and private high schools have been awarded 2003 Robert C. Byrd Scholarships, six from the St. Thomas/St. John District and five from St. Croix.
From St. Croix are: Karen T. Augustin, St. Croix Educational Complex, attending the University of Tampa; Cara A. Pascal, St. Croix Central High School, to attend Jacksonville University; Tina S. Meyers, St. Croix Educational Complex, to attend Wayne State University; Channel A. Richards, St. Croix Educational Complex, to attend the University of the Virgin Islands; and Kira E. Smith, St. Croix Educational Complex, to attend Elizabethtown College.
From St. Thomas and St. John are: Vernique Callwood, Antilles School, to attend Hiram College; James V. Hodge, All Saints Cathedral School, to attend Xavier University; William D. Jones Jr., Antilles School, to attend Wesleyan Univesity; Takara Alana Scott, Charlotte Amalie High School, to attend Bethune Cookman College; Nikki L. Tyler, Antilles School, to attend Boston College; and 'Shinika Watson, CAHS, to attend UVI.
The Byrd Scholarship is federally funded but administered annually by the V.I. Education Department, in compliance with section 419E of the federal Higher Education Act of 1965, according to a release. Under the program students received awards of $1,500 per year, which can be renewed for a maximum of four university or college years if eligibility is maintained.
