Oct. 21, 2003 – The Port Authority has received $1.5 million in federal homeland security funds to upgrade security at its marine facilities and enhance operational safety.
Some of the funds, received from the Homeland Security Department's Office of Domestic Preparedness, will go to improve marine terminals, commuter and ferry vessel access, and passenger security, according to a VIPA release.
VIPA officials will be working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and local law-enforcement agencies to implement the security-enhancing initiatives, it stated.
"This grant will accelerate the installation of enhanced security measures for passengers and cargo that pass through the seaports, which are vital links in the territory's economy," the release stated.
