STT Power Outage Wednesday Night

Power was out on much of St. Thomas and St. John Wednesday from 9:30 p.m. to 10:45 p.m.

According to the Water and Power Authority, unit 23, its big workhorse generator on St. Thomas, tripped at 9:28 pm resulting in a large number of feeders across St. Thomas and St. John falling off line. Two other units were on line at the time. Plant personnel started two smaller units, which added to the two units still online and began restoration of electric service at 9:36 p.m. according to WAPA.

Another smaller generating unit tripped momentarily at about 10:20 pm, but quickly recovered and using the four units, all feeders were restored to service.

Once restoration is complete, crews will investigate why unit 23 tripped, with the hopes of returning it to service as quickly as possible.
