Police Confirm Shooting Death of Akim Hyndman

The V.I. Police Department confirmed Friday that Akim Hyndman, 32, died of gunshot wounds earlier in the week.

According to police, at 8:39 p.m. Sunday officers responded to the Lima Company Fire Station for a call of a man with a gunshot wound.

Responding officers encountered a male later identified as Hyndman with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported by ambulance to the Roy L. Schneider Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

At about 1 p.m. Monday, Hyndman succumbed to his injuries, police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed Hyndman was in the vicinity of Tutu Hi-Rise, Building 21, when he was shot by an unknown assailant. He drove himself to the Lima Company Fire Station to seek assistance. He told police he did not see who shot him.

It was the ninth homicide on St. Thomas since the beginning of the year. It was one of six homicides in the territory in the space of eight days.
